Foley athlete lands first few offers
Barton Simmons
Rivals.com Football Recruiting Spring practice has already come and gone at Foley (Ala.) High School and so have numerous college coaches. One player that those coaches came through to see was athlete Darius Powell and a few of those coaches left offers behind in their wake.
As a junior, Powell was the starting quarterback for Foley and passed for over 1,000 yards while rushing for over 900. Though he's undersized at 5-foot-10 for quarterback, his athleticism shines through and a few coaches have taken notice.
"Right now I've got offers from Tulane, Florida International and Jacksonville State," Powell said. "Some other schools are contacting me like Ole Miss, The Citadel and Troy."
Of the three offers that he does have, Powell took notice of Tulane.
"Tulane of course is a really good academic school," he said. "They're real high in academics and what I want to major in which is business and business management."
Ole Miss may join the fray for Powell's services if he is able to have a strong performance at camp this summer.
"Ole Miss Coach Dickerson said that they've been watching my tape and like me but I just have to come to their camp this summer so they can see me practice," he said. "I'm getting all my camp stuff together right now with my coach and father."
Though wide receiver or defensive back is likely where Powell ends up on the next level, he is still looking to prove himself this fall under center in his team's spread offense.
"A lot of people doubt that I can play quarterback on the next level," he said. "I'm going as an athlete and I don't mind playing what they put me at but my goal this year is to pass for 2,000 yards and run for 1,000."
If those goals are accomplished, Foley and Powell could be in line for some big success in 2010.
